We wandered off the interstate to discover Seward, Nebraska, and found a courthouse square reminiscent of so many towns in Louisiana and Texas (but no Confederate monuments!). Chapters Books & Gifts has a nice corner location. It was lunchtime and they directed us cattycorner to Cafe on the Square, where we were charmed by the early-last-century brick interior and old-timey objects on the wall. Among them: a baseball uniform sponsored by a cigar company, and a bicycle built for two.
Oh, and the food was good, too! Some modern delicacies but also hearty meals like open-face pot roast sandwich with sourdough bread and brown gravy.
