I am so much enjoying visiting the independent bookstores. As an entrepreneur myself and former business editor, I appreciate how the indies have to diversify to retain their customer base and compete against big-box stores and online sales. They excel in personal service, of course, but also knowledge of regional literature and intimate settings where authors and booklovers can meet.
In Florida last month, college friend Debbie chauffeured me to five stores, including one of her favorites, Books & Books in Coral Gables. Great patio out front that’s lively at night, I hear. And an excellent cafe. Books & Books is so successful it has a chain of seven stores, five in Florida, one in Long Island and one in Cayman Islands.
