Magnolias and sweet memories …

magnolia smallerMagnolia trees are truly among God’s most beautiful creations–tall and stately, with glossy leaves, large and lush blossoms, and strong, wondrous branches just begging to be climbed on a hot day. That’s exactly what my niece’s two young daughters did a few years ago in our yard. They were visiting from California for their grandfather’s funeral and burial. The family gathered afterwards at our country home. The two girls quickly climbed out of my sight, reveling in the experience.

I hold that memory dear. A year later, a utility crew cut down the 30-foot tree, which was interfering with electrical lines. Five years later we lost the older of the girls in a bicycle accident on the way to school. There are simply no words to express the heartache.

But every time I see a magnolia blossom …
