What a fun group, the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance! Their trade show in Naples, Florida, lived up to its advance billing as a great experience. Such a sense of fun and passion about books!
The show floor was open all day Saturday. I arrived late Sunday — 10 a.m.–but just in time for my first flash mob. The loudspeakers came on and Chubby Checkers himself urged us, “Come on, everybody, do the Twist.” In the aisles, behind the exhibit tables, we all got in the groove, so to speak.
I was one of 23 authors featured in the last event, the Moveable Feast, and it was a kick — a literary version of speed dating! We each sat at a different table, had 6-8 minutes to pitch our book and charm our tablemates, then got up and moved to the next table. We only had time for 8 tables, but I could have done 8 more!
Then we moved to a different room for a fast session of book signing. Here I’m sharing a space with Random House author Melanie Benjamin, whose new book I had to bring home (an Advanced Readers Edition). It’s The Aviator’s Wife and it’s a fictional account of Ann Morrow Lindbergh and her marriage to early 20th century’s first white-hot celebrity, Charles Lindbergh. Look for it in February 2013.
