On the road … in Nebraska

Here for a week in my father’s home state, to explore his roots, visit relatives, and introduce my book.

I’ve never before visited Nebraska in October. The leaf color is lovely — especially in Lincoln, which has some charming neighborhoods and “manses” along  27th street from north to south of town. Lots of trees here … fewer farther west, in the prairie and the farmland, but they also are a golden color with occasional dark red.

Enjoyed exploring part of the University of Nebraska main campus and trying to imagine which buildings were here 80 years ago when my dad enrolled at the age of 16. He and his best friend, A.C. Cimfel, also from Clarkson in Colfax County, shared a room in a boarding house on R Street. The building is still here! — it’s a sorority house across from the campus.

Here’s a photo of older UN buildings and the leaf color.

Funny note: I brought along “Edith,” my GPS unit. She stumbles over these alphabet street names. She says  R-S-T, not R Street …
