One hallway in the capitol features formal portraits of recent governors. I had to laugh at seeing the Jerry Brown portrait from his first term. Totally modern, not stuffy at all. Another sight not to miss is in the hallway outside the governor’s office, in the annex. There sits a giant bronze bear by sculptor Steven Bennett. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger purchased it at a gallery in Aspen, Colorado, and installed it in 2009. The grizzly is the official state animal, but our guide informed us that this is not the right kind of bear. Schoolchildren love it, however, so beware if you reach out to pet it.
